Some puppies need help to eat. They might be born small or weak, could struggle to latch, or maybe the siblings consistently beat the puppy to a nipple.

In the 2-3 weeks of life, weigh the puppy daily. This will help you catch on quickly if any particular pup isn’t gaining weight. In the first 1-2 days, a pup may lose weight as they transition to life outside of the womb. But after 3 days old, we expect a puppy to gain weight every day!

How can you help a puppy who is not gaining weight?? Supplement feeding!

Bottle feeding or tube feeding are great alternatives to nursing. Use a high quality formula and follow a vet’s recommendations for how much to feed.

If a puppy has milk or bubbles coming from his nose, the bottle flow is too fast- too much milk is coming out at once. If the puppy tries to eat for 15 minutes without getting full, the flow of milk is likely too slow.
