Travel Aids

Most families have some travel to do after picking up their newest family member.

I recommend including:

-1-3 puppy pads,

-a toy- preferably a stuffed animal since it can feel similar to a littermate, and

-chew sticks for easing stress through biting and chewing.

These 3 items help the travel pass smoothly by keeping the puppy entertained, meaning less stress, and helping to clean any possible potty messes.

You want this transition to be effective and easy for puppy and family!

Adjustment to a New Life

As your baby arrives at home, literally everything will be new, and possibly SCARY! Poor baby!

Think of your pup and help to ease the changes by providing a bit of familiarity for the pup. I recommend:

-A toy that he is used to playing with- something that he’s been enjoying his whole life, such as a tug-of-war toy, a ball, or a rope toy, and

-A scent item that carries the smell of mom and littermates. Take a blanket and rub it on mom and littermates to get their smell on the item. Even better- allow the litter or mom to sleep on the item for a few nights before the pup goes home!

BONUS TIP- In order to help increase familiarity when the pup goes to his forever family, you can ask the family to send you a “scent item” that carries their scent! A pillowcase, an old T-shirt, anything that they use often (Remember that it can get dirty so don’t send anything nice or sentimental). Give the puppy one-on-one time to play and snuggle with the scent item from his family over the 1-2 weeks before he transitions home. Be sure to put the scent item back into a sealed ziploc baggie when not in use to preserve as much of the home scent as possible! Don’t allow the other puppies around the item- if you do, it will soon smell like the litter instead of smelling like home!

Documentation for the Family
